Here’s a portion of Memrise vocabulary I picked up this week:

  1. to wade: to walk in water that is not very deep

We rolled up our trousers and waded at the edge of the lake.

2. hapless: unlucky and usually unhappy

Many children are hapless victims of this war.

3. to foil: to prevent someone or something from being successful (really reminds me of to fail and even has a similar meaning)

The prisoners’ attempt to escape was foiled at the last minute when police received a tip-off.

4. to meld: to (cause something to) combine with something else

Several problems had melded together.

5. to prime: to tell someone something that will prepare them for a particular situation

I’d been primed so I knew not to mention her son.

6. to deter: to prevent someone from doing something or to make someone less enthusiastic about doing something by making it difficult for that person to do it or by threatening bad results if they do it

These measures are designed to deter an enemy attack.

7. proliferation (I only used it as a verb: to proliferate): the fact of something increasing a lot and suddenly in number or amount

The past two years have seen the proliferation of TV channels.

8. belligerent: wishing to fight or argue

Watch out! Lee’s in a belligerent mood.
